For many entrepreneurs and business owners, there’s a very real fear associated with blogging. This fear is often rooted in the permanency of words on the internet and the feeling that others will pick apart your work. The good news is that there are ways to overcome your fear of blogging and become a more confident writer. Are you willing to give it a try?

The Seven Deadly Fears

Every blogger is different, meaning every blogger struggles with different weaknesses and possesses unique strengths that allow them to overcome specific fears.

According to successful blogger Nathan Hangen, there are seven deadly fears of blogging – or at least seven different fears he personally faced during the first couple years of his blogging career. They are: manic idea generation, holding back, low confidence, little guy syndrome, irrational fear of guest posts, resistance to product creation, and fear of asking for money.

For most of us, we already know which of these fears are our biggest threats. And while each of these seven deadly fears of blogging is rampant, the issue of low confidence really seems to hit home for a lot of us.

Three Ways to Become More Confident

If you struggle with confidence, then rest assured that you aren’t alone. In fact, you have a community of thousands of other bloggers who are sorting through the same issues. Here are a few things you can do to become more confident:

1. Gain Perspective on Rejection

As a blogger, you’re going to face rejection. That’s just a fact of doing business. Ask anyone who’s spent time in any industry where they have to interact with customers and they’ll tell you a handful of stories about rejection. The key is to gain some perspective on rejection and understand that it’s not always personal.

“Facing rejection was a huge fear for me when I started out. Forcing myself to talk to strangers about my business – and then, understanding that business rejection isn’t personal – was probably the most critical step in my journey to ultimate success,” successful entrepreneur Sam Ovens says.

2. Limit Your Time Per Post

Here’s the deal: Very rarely will you publish a blog post and be 100 percent happy with it. There will always be a paragraph you feel needs tweaking, a headline that doesn’t sound right, or an image that doesn’t quite resonate with you – and that’s okay!

If you wait until you feel like a post is perfect before you publish it, then you’ll very rarely – if ever – publish anything. The best way to overcome this fear is to simply limit your time per post. If you’re writing a 1,000-word blog post, give yourself two hours and then publish it when the time runs out. It’s as simple as that. Pretty soon, you’ll learn to focus on what’s important and block out the elements that don’t really matter.

3. Disable Comment Sections

While they can be good in certain situations, blog comments are ultimately a nuisance. If you start reading too much into the comments, you’ll become fearful of what people are saying and pour all of your energy into defending yourself or pleasing them. Plus, most comment sections get taken over by hostile readers hiding behind anonymity.

As blogger Matt Gemmell says, “If your blog allows comments, you’re inviting people into your house – but sadly, some of them don’t conduct themselves appropriately.”

Become a Confident Blogger

As you can see, there are plenty of practical ways you can overcome your fears of blogging and become a more confident writer. It’ll take some hard work and determination, but you can get there. Strap yourself in, block out the noise, and get to work!
