比和比例是谁最先发现的？谁最先使用的？现在还难以确定。不过，在我国古代的数学专著《九章算术》里记载了当时世界上最先进的比例的算法。在外国，早在公元前5世纪就有了关于比和比例的思想。而且，公元前3世纪，欧几里得在他的著作《几何原理》中又做了系统的阐述。这就说明比和比例的概念在很早以前就产生了。

比同分数和除法之间也有着密切的联系。（比的前项相当于分数的分子、除法中的被除数，后项相当于分数的分母、除法中的除数，比值相当于分数中的分数值和除法中的商。）由此可以推测：人类首先认识了自然数，而后又产生了分数和四则运算，在这个基础上，经过人们的不断探索和研究，逐渐产生了比和比例的概念。可见，比和比例也是世界上历代数学家集体智慧的结晶。
