老师在黑板上出了一道题目：在一幅比例尺是1：300000的地图上，量得一块平原长6厘米，宽4厘米，求这块平原的面积是多少平方千米？

有的同学这样解答：

这块平原的图上面积为：6×4＝24（平方厘米）

平原的实际面积为：24÷（1/300000）＝24×300000＝7200000（平方厘米）＝720（平方米）＝0.00072（平方千米）

答案对不对呢？图上面积和实际面积的比也等于比例尺吗？

让我们换种方法看一看，先求出平原实际的长和宽，再求面积：

实际的长为：6÷（1/300000）＝1800000（cm）＝18000（m）＝18（km）

实际的宽为：4÷（1/300000）＝1200000（cm）=12000(m)=12(km)

实际面积为：18×12＝216（平方千米），也就是216000000平方米，还是2160000000000平方厘米。

那么不难求出图上面积与实际面积的比为：（6×4）：2160000000000＝1：90000000000

这个比与原来的比例尺有什么关系呢？原来它就是比例尺的平方：

（1/30000）×（1/30000）＝1/90000000000＝1：90000000000
